Bringing a spice of science to the young ones

Ever since my days in the kindergarten, I always thought that educational institutions, especially on the Balkan, lack the creativity stimulation processes that they should have. And I also thought that they are very monotonous and this doesn't really do good for the future motivation of kids.

But they are kids, tight? Why should they be motivated for the future?

Well, I don't know, maybe because the less professions they know that exist the less they understand about the diversity of things they could do. It's okay, but I don't think that most kids will say they want to be a doctor, or fireman, soldier or astronaut just because these are the most awesome jobs that a human can do. It is actually because they are not introduced to other types of career one can have.

Furthermore, I always thought that science is something kids should be introduced to from an early age, otherwise more and more non science based facts and even conspiracies will be supported ( the flat Earth theory is a brilliant example for this), and once you start believing in something from an early age as a fundamental truth it is very hard to change it later in the years, no matter how much your beliefs defy logic.

That's why, after our winter break, the first activity I did with the kids if the Petrache Poenaru kindergarten was a scientific one. A simple experiment, they are young after all, but they sure loved it.

To be more specific, I showed them how a potato can be a battery, explaining of course with very simple terms. They were truly amazed by it, how you can wire together a couple of potatoes and use them to feed electricity to an LED.

I do think that there should be some more activities done, similar to this, so that kids would start getting interested with science and electronics, because isn't that after all what our future truly relies on?
