As you may or may not know I'm an international Volunteer. I left my country Portugal to come to Romania to do European Voluntary Service (EVS). It was a BIG change in my life, I left everything that I knew to come to the unknown. To be honest I didn't knew much about Romania, I knew that my uncle was Romanian and that he had family in my city and that Romania was an European Country.
This was my first time doing International Volunteering, but I had previous volunteering experience. I did a lot of volunteering in my city back in Portugal. I cleaned beaches and parks, I was a team guide for a Portuguese football team, I worked in museums, elderly homes and took care of children.
So as you can see I can never sit still when it comes to volunteering, I always have projects in my mind.
I still remember my trip to Romania, with much uncertainty, it was my first experience volunteering so far and for so long, my doubts were recurrent throughout the trip: would I like the country? The project in which I had been interested, with what would I find there once, and, above all, would I feel comfortable and welcome? It was to step on the airport in Craiova and found those friendly smiles that were waiting for me, all those thoughts that were sheltering me suddenly disappeared and I was invaded by a calm and unexpected tranquility ... that feeling was very special.
There are people and places that make you change for the better and make you a little happier. If I had to think about the most beautiful trip I've ever made, I would definitely say this. From the first moment to the current moment I have been able to live and experience so many emotions that the words will fall short.
Even though I still remember my first day here and my arrival day, the days pass and each day is different, although the activities may be the same, because each one of us gets up in a way and every day there are new stories that happen. In those situations, the more you need the help of others, the more you realize you have. I will not tire of saying it, the experience with the kids is spectacular, but what you have with the rest of the people, volunteers, teachers, helpers, townspeople, is: unforgettable.
I really encourage you to seriously consider this volunteering, this or another, because the change in oneself is spectacular.
Hugs and kisses,
Bárbara
